Cape Town Mom: Balancing Business & Family Beautifully
Meet Julia: The Feminine Side to SK & Cape Town Mom
Mothers Day is only a few days away, which gives us the perfect opportunity to have a quick chat with Julia- the feminine side to SK Projects & Investments.
Julia may be a Cape Town mom now, but she originates from Germany. Although her roots are in Germany, her future and heart is with Cape Town.
Having lived in both German and Cape Town Julia shares some really interesting perspectives on the differences she noticed in Cape Town moms and Germans moms (Also on German property vs Western Cape property)
Although her primary job lies outside of SK Projects & Investments, Julia played a core part in the business’s early development- continuing to contribute to its brand, systems, and strategy.
This blog shares an authentic conversation on modern motherhood, leadership, creative support, property opportunities & prosperity in creating. All told from the perspective of a Cape Town mom, navigating it all.
Julia moved to Cape Town from Germany and supported her husband in launching SK Projects & Investments. Today, she works remotely for a global company while raising their children. Her story offers insight into the quiet, essential contributions many women make while balancing full-time work and family.

One Word to Describe SK Projects
Q: If you had to describe SK Projects & Investments in one word, what would it be?
Julia: “Flourishing. You’re like blossoming- There’s so much we can do, and it’s not just the work itself, but it’s like what’s behind it. You know, you design something new, you create new spaces, new homes, and I feel that’s just nice about it.
Q: Why ‘flourishing’? What inspired this word?
Julia: “because I also think we are out of the baby phase. I mean, we are still a startup, if you want to call it that, but we are growing on different terms. We know more what we want from the company. Also Cape Town is flourishing. So that’s why I think also it’s a quite interesting word to describe it also for the company, because obviously if Cape Town is doing good, then we in the property or in the construction industry are doing good.”
“I do think that SK projects and investments in general is just flourishing from all the knowledge we gained. We have a full grown team, which is very nice in terms of if we want to expand, then that means we have to get new people on board again. And it’s like, I see it as a little flower. You know, sometimes they’re open, then they close again, then they go open and they close again. And I think this can happen with a business as well. So it’s going good. And then it hibernates a little bit in terms of you might rethink things. You might rethink the strategy of the business and who do you want to get involved with”
Real Talk: What It’s Like Being a Mompreneur in Cape Town
Q: What have you observed about mothers in Cape Town?
Julia: “Moms are superheroes… they work, raise kids, run businesses… I see a lot of women here they have their own business in order to have more time with the kids and I think this is amazing.”
Julia points out an interesting cultural contrast: while German corporate systems feel rigid, South African mothers show more flexibility and self-driven adaptation. Business becomes a tool for autonomy, not just income.
How Motherhood Enhances Business Skills
Q: What’s one skill that crosses over between parenting and business?
Julia: “Organizing. You must know where everything is… structure… routine… when the guys are coming in… what needs to be done when… that’s exactly the same as what you do with your kids.”
Q: What does motherhood mean to you right now?
Julia: “Everything. I would say I’m in my absolute mom era… fulfilled, complete, it’s content… I’ve never been so content in my life.”
Insights on Branding, Marketing, and Growth
Q: How were you involved in branding and the early stages?
Julia: “…putting it all together with Shaheen… my idea was to go fully on LinkedIn and Instagram from the start… most of our customers are coming from Instagram… branding… the logo… where we want to go… our next business strategies…”
This speaks to her input in shaping the brand’s identity and its social presence, particularly in establishing trust and recognizability online.
5 Takeaways for Aspiring Mompreneurs in Cape Town
- Your Role Can Evolve – You don’t need to do everything. Find where you add the most value.
- Cape Town Is a Fertile Market – Despite seasonal dips and rising costs, flexibility and clear positioning can help you grow.
- Social Media Is Still King – Especially in construction and design, Instagram builds trust and visibility.
- Motherhood Builds Business Skills – From scheduling to crisis management, motherhood trains you.
- You Define the Balance – Balance isn’t symmetry. It’s making space where you can, when you can.

Business, like motherhood, happens in seasons. Some are expansion. Some are rest. The key is awareness and intentional direction.
Did You Know? What’s it like being a Cape Town mom vs german mom?
South African vs International Maternity Leave Laws:
South Africa:
-
Offers 4 months unpaid maternity leave (Basic Conditions of Employment Act).
-
Mothers can claim benefits through UIF, typically receiving 38%–60% of their salary depending on earnings.
-
No mandatory paid maternity leave unless stipulated by employer.
Germany (for comparison):
-
Offers 14 weeks paid maternity leave (6 weeks before birth, 8 after), fully paid by health insurance.
-
Parents can then take up to 3 years of parental leave, with part of it paid as “Elterngeld” (up to 67% of income, capped).
-
Fathers are encouraged to take parental leave too.
➡️ It puts things into perspective when you’re a Cape Town mom juggling it all with far fewer systemic supports.
Real-Life Tips from Cape Town Moms
Drawing inspiration from mom bloggers and communities, here are some relatable strategies that resonate with many Cape Town moms:
-
Embrace Imperfection: Cherralle from My Daily Cake emphasizes the importance of letting go of the “supermom” ideal. She suggests that striving for a spotless home can add unnecessary pressure. Instead, focus on what truly matters and accept that it’s okay if everything isn’t perfect all the time. South African Working Mom Blog+1South African Working Mom Blog+1

Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and family time. When you’re with your children, be fully present. This might mean turning off work notifications during family hours to ensure quality time together. Kicksaw+1Tremhost+1

Being a Cape Town mom has taught me how strong and adaptable we really are. We juggle so much—work, home, children, and the quiet parts no one sees. But we also get to build something beautiful out of it. Whether it’s a career, a home, or a way of living that works for our families, I believe in designing a life that feels like yours.
