Key Upgrades & Enhancements:
1. Extending the Boundary Wall – A Minimalist Privacy Solution
The objective was to increase privacy without the heaviness of a traditional extended wall or bulky trellises. Instead of opting for standard wooden trellises, which can be visually and structurally heavy, a custom-designed wooden framework with wire rope was used.
- Why This Works: The structure provides privacy while maintaining an open, airy feel.
- Material Choice: The wood used is weather-resistant and highly durable, ensuring long-term stability against Cape Town’s coastal climate.
- Design Consideration: The wire rope element keeps the extension lightweight, preventing the space from feeling enclosed while offering a structured foundation for creeping jasmine, which will gradually grow in to create a natural green screen.
2. Reworking the Large Feature Wall – Smoothing, Cladding & Green Integration
The original wall had a back door, metal railing, and raised staircase, which were all removed to streamline the area. The door opening was seamlessly sealed and reinforced before the entire surface was refinished and repainted.
- Stone Cladding: Natural stone was sourced to create a textured, organic finish, adding warmth and depth to the large blank surface.
- Jasmine Trellis System: Instead of a standard trellis, a custom diamond-pattern wire system was installed, allowing jasmine vines to climb and soften the wall naturally over time. This approach turns the wall into a living feature, integrating the architecture with the landscaping.
3. Enhancing the Poolside Flooring – Cleaning & Restoring
Rather than replacing the original poolside tiles, the existing ones were thoroughly cleaned, re-grouted, and refurbished. This approach maintained the integrity of the space while significantly improving the overall finish.
4. Functional Built-In Features – Polished Concrete & Stonework
A major addition was the custom-built seating and planter areas, which provide both structure and usability:
- Built-in Benches: Constructed from polished concrete and blended with natural stone elements, the benches are highly durable and visually cohesive with the cladding.
- Planter Boxes: Raised planters were designed along the pool’s edge to house layered greenery, including jasmine, shrubs, and palm trees. This helps define the space while integrating soft, natural elements.
Material Coordination: The polished cement incorporates brown stone aggregates, complementing the natural stone cladding for a seamless, well-balanced aesthetic.
